HRC Hunt Tests
Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) Hunt Tests are non-competitive events hosted by
an approved United Kennel Club (UKC) Club. The Ohio Hunting Retriever Club
(OHRC) is a Licensed, affiliated Club of the UKC/HRC and has been approved to
hold such events.
Three categories, Started, Seasoned and Finished, are offered at Hunt Tests.
According to UKC/HRC rules, the Ohio HRC will run all three categories.
Started
Started tests are designed for young and/or inexperienced retrievers that might
not have hunting experience or limited exposure to hunting. A Started
hunt will consist of 2 tests as follows:
- 2 single water marks
- 2 single land marks
These tests are designed to
determine the retrievers marking ability in simulated hunting conditions. The
use of duck calls, guns, decoys and boats are often used.
Five (5) Championship points per HRC hunt is awarded for those dogs who
pass all Started Hunting Retriever tests. Four (4) Started passes are required
for a retriever to earn a Started Hunting Retriever (SHR) title. A maximum of
ten (10) Championship points can be earned toward a Seasoned title at the Started
level.
Seasoned
Seasoned tests are designed for retrievers that have had a season or two of
hunting experience and have had more training than in the Started category.
A Seasoned hunt will consist of 5 tests as follows:
- Double water retrieve
- Double land retrieve
- Walk-up, tracking or quartering test
- A blind water retrieve
- A blind land retrieve
The retriever must be steady
at the line and must deliver to hand. The handler is required to handle the gun
with all efforts to simulate an actual hunting condition.
Ten (10) Championship points per HRC hunt is awarded for those dogs who
pass all Seasoned Hunting Retriever tests.
A maximum of forty (40) Championship points must be earned in this category
toward a Hunting Retriever (HR) title. Ten (10) of those points may be earned
in the Started category leaving thirty (30) to be earned in the Seasoned category.
Finished
Finished tests are designed for the advanced retriever. Such retrievers
usually have several years of hunting experience and intensive training. The Finished
retriever must pass the required tests with a high degree of accuracy and
consistency under any hunting condition. A
Finished hunt will consist of 4 tests as follows:
- A multiple marked water retrieve
- A multiple marked land retrieve
- A water blind retrieve
- A land blind retrieve
- Note: Either or both the multiple marked
water or land retrieves must include an honor and a diversion
retrieve.
Fifteen (15) Championship points per HRC hunt is awarded for those dogs who
pass a Finished Hunting Retriever test.
A maximum of one hundred (100) Championship points must be earned in this category
toward a Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH) title. Sixty (60) of those points
must be earned at the Finished level. The remaining fourty (40) points can be
earned at the Started and Seasoned level.
